COVID19-062 – May 19,  2020

Dear Patients,

Over the past week, despite improving COVID statistics, I have been hearing from patients that they are feeling more anxious. For many, it isn't about a particular issue; mostly it is just that "they don't feel quite right." Some say they feel restless, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleeping too much, unable to sleep, etc, etc. Many feel they can't focus. Many are just worried.

"COVID anxiety," like any anxiety, starts focused and then generalizes and grows, like a snowball picking up speed as it rolls down a mountain. Our minds and bodies have been literally assaulted with daily information that invokes fear. And here we are today: we have flattened the curve, most states have begun to open, NASCAR is back on the track, there was a golf tournament this past weekend and MLB is tooling up with new rules including no spitting, no chewing of tobacco or sunflower seeds!

We are now making choices and taking a chance to change our lives and move forward. If you are feeling anxious, you can make a choice not to believe your worries and take the chance to change your life for the better. The majority of our worries never materialize but these negative scary thoughts steal the present from us and have us dread the future. The worries are just brain trash, so take out the trash

Bottom line: most all of us feel it, so acknowledge it, stay in the present, have a plan, and keep moving forward!

"The 3 C's of life:

Choices, Chances, Changes.

You must make a Choice to take a Chance

or your life will never Change."

The numbers:

Maryland:   41,546 cases -/- 1,963 deaths -/- 4.7% fatality rate

Greater than 50% of the deaths in Maryland continue to be nursing facility residents or staff.

The Maryland Rt was updated yesterday and is 0.95 (stable); the lower the better.

Diagnostics and Therapeutics:

Vaccine trials are encouraging. The early results of the Moderna vaccine produced an antibody response. There are over 100 different companies racing to produce an effective vaccine.

On a Musical Note: (thank you DA, and this is for you MH - remember when we saw this at the Pikes?)

Remember this song? It was one of Simon & Garfunkel's biggest hits. The song really took off when Mike Nichols decided to use it as the theme song for The Graduate. Feeling stressed? Sit down, close your eyes, slowly breathe, and listen to the Sounds of Silence.

On a lighter note: (thanks FS)
