Dr. Oken is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Zoology and M.S. parasitology.  In 1983, he graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  He completed his Internship and Residency training at the University Maryland, followed by an additional year as Chief Resident.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). After finishing as a Chief Resident, he continued to stay as a faculty member and attained the rank of Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland.  Every Wednesday afternoon for 28 years, he ran the Ambulatory Internal Medicine Clinic for the Residency program.  In 2015, he retired but still retains his appointment and is now Adjunct Professor of Medicine, continuing to contribute to the University in other ways.

 
Dr. Oken served for 14 years as the Chairman of Medicine at Howard County General Hospital and is still on staff.  He has been listed in the Best Doctors of America since 1997 and has also been recognized in Baltimore Magazine’s “Top Doc”.

Dr. Oken has published a variety of articles in professional journals and is the co-author of the book “BOOM, Boost Our Own Metabolism, A Guide to a Better Life.   In addition, from the onset of the COVID pandemic, he written well over 100 newsletters that have been forwarded literally around the globe. 

Since 2007, he has served as the Medical Director for the Columbia Association, a nonprofit whose mission is to improve the health and welfare of the community.  He has previously hosted a monthly video series on “Columbia Matters” and now a monthly podcast “Finding your Wellness”.

Dr. Oken has lived in Columbia since 1979.  He and his wife Janet have been involved in numerous fund-raising activities for various nonprofits in the area.
